Can High Blood Pressure Go Unnoticed? Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
CDC research indicates that at least 50% of Americans have high blood pressure (hypertension), although many are unaware.
It often surprises people that high blood pressure doesn’t make them feel sick. You can go to work, care for your family, exercise, and sleep perfectly unaware that your blood pressure is too high. That’s one reason many people don’t realize they have hypertension until a routine checkup shows a problem.
At Healing Hearts Clinic, we want our patients to understand that high blood pressure doesn’t have to be loud to harm the heart, blood vessels, brain, kidneys, and eyes over time.
Fortunately, once we find it, we can help you take steps to manage it and lower your risk of serious health problems.
Why high blood pressure often goes unnoticed
Blood pressure measures the force of blood as it pushes against your artery walls. When that force stays too high, your heart works harder than it should. Over time, that extra strain can damage your arteries and reduce your heart’s efficiency.
You can have high blood pressure for months or years without knowing it. During that time, it can increase your risk of:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Kidney disease
- Vision problems
- Heart failure
Regular blood pressure checks give you a clearer picture of what’s happening inside your body before damage occurs.
Warning signs you shouldn’t ignore
Although high blood pressure typically causes no symptoms, certain warning signs deserve prompt attention. These symptoms don’t always mean your blood pressure has spiked, but they do indicate that something’s amiss.
Seek medical advice if you notice:
- Frequent or severe headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort
- Irregular or pounding heartbeat
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Blurred vision or sudden vision changes
- Unusual fatigue
- Nosebleeds that happen often
- Swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet
These signs can be linked to many different health concerns, including heart or circulatory problems. We’d rather check early than have you wait and worry.
When high blood pressure becomes an emergency
Some symptoms need immediate medical attention, especially if your blood pressure reading reaches 180/120 or higher. If that happens, wait one minute and check it again. If the second reading stays that high and you have symptoms, call 911.
Emergency symptoms include:
- Chest pain
- Breathing difficulty
- Back pain
- Weakness
- Numbness
- Syncope (fainting)
- Vision changes
- Confusion
- Trouble speaking
These can signal a hypertensive emergency, stroke, heart attack, or another serious problem.
Don’t try to sleep it off or wait for the reading to come down on its own if you feel these symptoms. Fast care protects your heart, brain, and other organs.
Blood pressure checks are critical
A blood pressure check takes only a few minutes, but it gives us valuable information. We may check your blood pressure during a routine visit, ask you to monitor it at home, or recommend that you take follow-up readings to confirm a pattern.
One high reading doesn’t always mean you have hypertension. Stress, caffeine, pain, exercise, or even rushing into an appointment can temporarily raise your numbers. However, repeated high readings tell us we need to act.
Home blood pressure monitoring can help, especially if your readings change between visits. We can show you how to use a cuff correctly, when to check your numbers, and what readings to report.
How we help you manage high blood pressure
If your blood pressure runs high, we’ll work with you on a practical plan. For some people, lifestyle changes make a big difference. These may include:
- Eating more fruits and vegetables
- Lowering sodium (salt) intake
- Moving more
- Managing stress
- Improving sleep
- Limiting alcohol
- Quitting smoking
Some people also need medication for extra support.
We’ll explain your options, answer your questions, and adjust your plan when needed. Our goal isn’t just to lower a number on a chart. We want to help you feel confident, informed, and in control of your heart health.
Don’t wait for symptoms
High blood pressure can go unnoticed, but it doesn’t have to go unchecked. Regular visits, honest conversations, and simple monitoring can help catch problems early.
If you haven’t had your blood pressure checked recently or are noticing symptoms that concern you, we encourage you to schedule a visit with Healing Hearts Clinic. Together, we can protect your heart and help you take the next right step for your health. Call or book an appointment online today.
